Chapter Ten

Luke sat next to Violet on a pew in the United Methodist Church. Violet’s parents were on the other side of her on the same seat. This arrangement was different from attending his Amish church service because the men and the boys would never sit with the females. The Amish women and girls always sat on the other side. Both men and women sat on backless, wooden benches instead of pews with backs. Luke wore his Amish clothes because he decided against borrowing Adam’s. He knew it’d be uncomfortable for him to wear someone else’s clothes. Although he wasn’t embarrassed by his Plain clothing, he left his straw hat in the car. No point in drawing more attention to himself with carrying his simple Amish hat. He wasn’t sure if there’d be a spot to put his hat before entering the church.

Glancing at Violet, he thought how incredibly lovely she looked in her yellow sleeveless dress. In a couple of weeks, she might be wearing Amish clothing. She planned on sewing two dresses and aprons soon. He told her he’d get prayer coverings from his sisters. They had several extra ones. He worried a little that Violet might not adjust to wearing Plain clothing. He’d noticed she frequently wore jeans, capris, and sundresses. Would she be able to get used to wearing the same style of Plain dress on a daily basis? Although she’d been around her Amish relatives a lot during her life, was it reasonable to expect her to be able to stop wearing all her English clothing?

After glancing at Violet, he noticed the stained glass windows. Even though Luke thought they looked beautiful in the church, the windows seemed too showy to him. It probably seemed that way to him because he was used to having an Amish church service in the barn or someone’s house. The environment in an English church was extremely different from where his daed, ministers, and deacon preached. They didn’t have a fancy organ, but sang their German songs from a church hymnal, the Ausbund, without any musical instrumental assistance.

However, he didn’t feel this way about the big simple cross centered on a wall behind the minister’s podium. He thought the cross was tasteful and a wunderbaar reminder that Jesus died, so Christians could have eternal life. Off to one side in the front were three short rows of chairs for the choir members. The choir was dressed in white robes with huge sleeves. When they sang their inspiring hymns, his heart and spirit felt uplifted and holy.

Feeling God’s presence in an English church might not be something his parents would want to hear, but it helped to know he could adjust to going to this type of church if Violet couldn’t change her faith. He’d hate to leave the Amish community and his buggy shop, but Violet was the woman he wanted to spend the rest of his life with. Whatever happened, they both believed in the same God, so that was something essential.
